Maybe it wasn't really signalled for some readers till the final book. In that one, he is shown as a man who had only one intimate friendship in his late youth with another male youth of astonishing beauty and strengths.<BR/>From the first book, I've seen Dumbledore as the scholarly bachelor who has no romantic ties to women, and whose sexuality is very contained. Rowling's statement about him being gay is very consistent with how she has played the character from the very first.
